This is not a scientific, psychological, or otherwise serious personality test.

It’s merely a fun sort of fortune- telling game that I learned from a friend. She asked me 7 hypothetical questions and, depending on how I answered them, interpreted deeper insights about me from them.

I found it interesting and surprisingly accurate—about me and about most everyone else I tried it on since. So, I thought you might like to try it. Let me know if works for you, too.

Read the first question carefully. Don’t think too long before answering it, and don’t fight the hypothetical. In other words, don’t try to change the question or the choice of answers. You might want to answer with qualifications or with your own questions like, “That depends on whether … ,” or “What if … ?” But, this little test only works if you stick to one of the choices given. Write your answers down so you can forget about each one long enough to give your full attention to the next one. Repeat this process until you are done with all seven questions. Don’t read the answer key below till you’ve answered all the questions because you’re likely to be strongly influenced by them.

7 QUESTIONS PERSONALITY TEST

1. “You’re at the entrance to a dark tunnel. You can take one candle or as many as you want. How many do you take?”

2. “At the end of the tunnel, you find yourself at the edge of a desert. At your feet, there are many extra pairs of shoes. Do you continue with the shoes you are wearing or take extra pairs of shoes? And, if so, how many?”

3. “After walking for miles in the desert, you stumble upon an oasis. Do you dive into the water, or do you step cautiously toward it?”

4. “You come across another person. It starts to rain. You see a cave in the side of a hill. Do you take the person’s hand as you head for the shelter, or do you walk ahead and let your new friend follow?”

5. “You are finally out of the desert (by yourself again). You come to a house. You knock on the door. A person opens the door. Is that person your friend’s parent, your friend’s younger sibling, or your friend?”

6. “You are in the bedroom of the house. There is a red rose in the room. Is it on the bed or in a vase on the bureau?”

7. “Through the window in the bedroom you see your friend swimming in the pool. Do you join your friend in the pool, do you sit on the pool’s edge dangling your feet in the water, or do you sit on a nearby chair and simply watch your friend?”

ANSWER KEY TO 7 QUESTIONS

1. The number of candles represents the number of life partners you desire.

2. A greater number of pairs of shoes represents a preference for greater preparedness for life’s challenges and endeavors versus a single pair of shoes which shows a preference for taking one day at a time.

3. Diving into the water in the oasis suggests a tendency to dive into new relationships, while approaching cautiously means you prefer to approach new relationships slowly and with caution.

4. Taking the person’s hand shows that you are naturally protective of others and value close friendships with people. Leading the way by yourself shows that you are more independent and trust others to take care of themselves.

5. If your friend’s parent answers the door, you desire an older person for a life partner and want your partner to take the lead in the relationship. Your friend’s younger sibling represents your preference for a life partner who is younger than you are and for your desire to be in charge of the relationship. Your friend represents your preference for a partner who is around the same age as you and your desire to treat each other as equals in the relationship.

6. If the rose is on the bed, sex in very important to you. But, if it is on the bureau, sex is only one of many parts of your relationship that are important to you.

7. If you jump into the pool, you will directly confront your lover if you ever suspect them of cheating on you. If you dangle your feet in the water, you will try to confirm or dispel your suspicions in less direct ways, such as looking through pockets or wallets/purses or calling the “other” person to confront them. If you sit on the chair, you will do nothing and try to ignore your suspicions.

CONCLUSION

So, how’d you do? Can you guess how I did? I picked a bunch of candles and one pair of shoes, I jumped into the water and walked ahead toward the cave, my friend’s younger sibling opened the door, the rose was on the bed, and I sat in the chair by the pool. That was years ago, when I was adrift in the relationship waters. I hope my answers would be a lot different now, but there’s no way to tell since I know the answer key. If you know of any similar tests, please share them with me because I’m dying to find out! I get such a kick out of little fortune-telling tricks!

Honestly… you can do better… what a bunch of BS!
I didn’t take any other shoes, what will happen to your shoes in a desert…. get wet? More shoes = extra weight so if there isn’t any good rational explanation for bringing them, you shouldn’t!! So how does this relates to being prepared for life?

  3. Shanel Yang Says:

Pedro, let me draw your attention to the first 2 sentences: “This is not a scientific, psychological, or otherwise serious personality test. [¶] It’s merely a fun sort of fortune-telling game that I learned from a friend.” Sounds like you took it seriously.

  4. Issa Says:

I totally had a great time answering this! hahaha.. . I had 7 candles,2 extra shoes, cautiously approaching the oasis, taking a person’s hand, my friend answered the door, rose on the bureau, and then jump into the pool…

I would be asking my friends to try this fun fortune-telling test.. hahaha
