It’s a Small World After All

Everyone knows the tune. Most people can sing the chorus. But, have you ever really listened to the words of the cute little song made world-famous by Disneyland’s “It’s a Small World” slow boat ride?

Let’s take a look:

It’s a world of laughter
A world of tears
It’s a world of hopes
And a world of fears
There’s so much that we share
That it’s time we’re aware
It’s a small world after all

There is just one moon
And one golden sun
And a smile means
Friendship to ev’ryone
Though the mountains divide
And the oceans are wide
It’s a small world after all

It’s a small world after all
It’s a small world after all
It’s a small world after all
It’s a small, small world

“Tears?” “Fears?” How come I never noticed those words before? Maybe because the adorable animatronic dolls are so infectiously cheerful! Hard to believe this ride and song debuted at the 1964/1965 New York World’s Fair, as the result of President Eisenhower’s plea to American celebrities, including Walt Disney, to help foster world peace. Ike would know a thing or two about world war and world peace. He was in charge of the Allied forces’ triumphant invasion of France and Germany in 1944 to 1945. Afterwards, when they found the horrifying remains of the Holocaust in the Death Camps, he ordered camera crews to document them for the war crimes tribunals. He reclassified German POWs (Prisoners of War) in U.S. custody as DEFs (Disarmed Enemy Forces) and stripped them of the humanitarian rights normally granted all prisoners of war by the Geneva Conventions.

The world is even smaller now than it was then. And, it’s getting smaller all the time. As the weather warms and families plan their summer vacations everywhere around this beautiful Earth, perhaps you will remember the meaning behind this song when you see people who look a little different, act a little different, and speak different languages than we do. If so, give them a little smile to show you mean friendship, just like in the song. Because, after all, it really is a small, small world!
