February 14, Valentine’s Day, is coming soon! This is the day that people around the world celebrate romantic love by giving special gifts to one another.
Americans have several traditions related to Valentine’s Day that you might want to know.
And, if you are secretly interested in anyone romantically, this is the perfect day to let him or her know it. Also see “How to Ask for a Date.”

SECRET ADMIRERS
One American tradition is the “secret admirer.” He sends small gifts such as greeting cards, chocolate candies, or flowers anonymously to the one he secretly admires. This is usually done by a man to a woman and not the other way around.
Keep your messages on the cards short, polite, and respectful. Never write anything demanding, insulting, or threatening. Here are some examples:
Valentine’s Day card: “Hope your Valentine’s Day is sweet! Your Secret Admirer.”
Gift card with chocolate candies: “Sweets for the sweet! Happy Valentine’s Day. Your Secret Admirer.”
Gift card with flowers: “A little something to brighten your day! Happy Valentine’s Day. Your Secret Admirer.”
These gifts usually make the recipient happy but also curious about who sent them. If she knows you, she might ask if you did it. If she ask you, you can say:
“Yes. I hope you liked it. I thought it would be a nice way to tell you I like you.”
Or:
“Yes. Did you like it?” Let her take it from there. Usually, she will tell you if she is not interested in you romantically. If that happens, just say, “I understand.” Then, move on to someone else who might be interested in you.
APPROPRIATE GIFTS
If you are already in a romantic relationship, appropriate gifts include a large box of chocolates, a dozen red roses, or jewelry, especially diamonds. Obviously, if your relationship is a new one, you want to start with chocolates instead of diamonds. Diamonds are usually saved for relationships of two years or more. A dozen red roses are a great romantic gift for men or women at any time of the year because they symbolize passion and romantic love. Women typically give their love interests Valentine’s Day cards or make romantic dinners at home.
ROMANTIC DINNERS
If the woman is not planning a romantic dinner, men are expected to make reservations at a nice restaurant. Reservations fill up quickly, so make them early!
