New Year’s Resolutions

A lot of people in the U.S. like to make New Year’s resolutions. These are promises to themselves (and sometimes to their family and friends) that they will stop a bad habit or start a good one beginning on the very first day of the new year.

People might ask you if you have a new year’s resolution; and, if you do, what is it? The most common American ones are: lose weight; get into shape; exercise more; quit smoking; drink less alcohol; eat healthier; study more; work more; make more money; spend less money; save more money; work less and enjoy life more; spend more time with family and friends; and, even, quit making new year’s resolutions!

Here is a typical conversation around the New Year:

A: Did you make any new year’s resolutions?

B: Yes. Quit smoking.

A: That’s a hard one.

B: You know it! But, I’ll do my best.

A: Good luck.

B: Thanks. What about you? Did you make any?

A: Every year, the same thing. I promise myself I’ll go to the gym every morning before work. I go for about two weeks. Then, it’s back to the old routine.

B: Well, that’s a hard one, too. Good luck with it.

A: Thanks.

Here is another conversation about New Year’s resolutions:

A: Do you have a new year’s resolution?

B: No. I don’t believe in them.

A: Why not?

B: I think if people want to break bad habits or start new good ones, every day is a good day to start.

A: I never thought of it like that.

B: Anyway, New Year’s resolutions never worked for me. They just made me feel bad when I couldn’t keep them. Now, whenever I want to change something about my life, I just do it, regardless of the time of year.

A: That sounds reasonable. Maybe I’ll try that, too.

B: I recommend it.

A: Thanks for the tip!

B: You’re welcome!

CONCLUSION

Whether you make any New Year’s resolutions, be awesome! Be your own hero!
