Holiday Greetings and Xmas Carols
This time of year, people often say hello or goodbye and also a holiday greeting. The most common one, these days, is “Happy holidays!” This is a good one because it avoids the possibility of offending any religion or belief system.
In past years, most people just said, “Merry Christmas!” But, Christianity is not the only religion or belief system that is celebrated this time of year. For example, there are also Judaism and Kwanzaa.
If you someone greets you with a cheery “Merry Christmas!” and that greeting does not offend you, you can return the greeting with your own hearty:
“Merry Christmas!”
But, don’t be the first person to say “Merry Christmas” to anyone because you might offend Jewish persons or African-Americans who might not celebrate Christmas.
What you can always say first to anyone you see this time of year is:
“Happy new year!”
Having said all that, over 75% of Americans are Christians. And, most Americans, whether Christian or not, enjoy the traditional Christmas carols. If you have ever wondered what the strange words are to some of those songs so you could sing along, here are a few of the most popular ones:
JINGLE BELLS
Dashing through the snow
In a one-horse open sleigh
O’er the fields we go
Laughing all the way
Bells on bobtails ring
Making spirits bright
What fun it is to laugh and sing
A sleighing song tonight
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh
SILENT NIGHT
Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
RUDOLF THE RED-NOSED REINDEER
Rudolf, the red-nosed reindeer
Had a very shiny nose
And if you ever saw it
You would even say it glows
All of the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names
They never let poor Rudolf
Join in any reindeer games
Then one foggy Christmas Eve
Santa came to say:
“Rudolf, with your nose so bright,
Won’t you guide my sleight tonight?”
Then all the reindeer loved him
As they shouted out with glee:
“Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer,
You’ll go down in history!”
DECK THE HALLS
Deck the halls with boughs of holly
Fa la la la la, la la la la
Tis the season to be jolly
Fa la la la la, la la la la
Don we now our gay apparel
Fa la la, la la la, la la la
Troll the ancient Yule tide carol
Fa la la la la, la la la la
WE WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS
We wish you a merry Christmas
We wish you a merry Christmas
We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year
Good tidings we bring to you and your kin
Good tidings for Christmas and a happy new year
CONCLUSION
Happy holidays, and happy new year! Be awesome! Be your own hero!
